『곡운집』 「법성전」의 표류항로 - 이효웅

 

승려 法性은 쌍계사 16나한상을 1654년 봄에 경주 천태산에서 조성하여 하동 쌍계사로 移運하려고 하였다. 경주 장진포에서 배에 싣고 출항하였으나 부산 앞바다에서 강한 남풍을 만나 북해로 표류하여 흑룡해로 갔다가 일본을 거쳐 2년 반 만에 조선에 돌아왔다. 법성 일행 26명은 흑룡해에서 해적들을 세 차례나 만났으며, 일본에서 2년간 머물면서 왜경(倭京)에도 갔다 오고 많은 사람들로부터 도움을 받았다. 1656년5월 여름에 일본상선과 함께 출발하여 1656년8월에 부산에 무사히 도착하였고, 16나한상을 쌍계사에 무사히 안치하였다.

 

김수증은 1665년(현종 6) 강원도 평강군 희령산 심적암에서 승려 법성을 만나 표류기와 이웃나라의 소식을 전해 듣고 『곡운집』 「법성전」에 기록하였다.

흑룡해에서 3개월 동안 표류한 이유와 木米島, 加里島, 穴島, 渭島 지명이 어떻게 명명되었고, 9일 만에 표착한 일본의 봉화섬은 어디인지 궁금하여 범선항해 경험과 해류병 실험, 구글어스 사진을 통하여 표류항로를 알아보고자 하였다.

 

법성 일행과 16나한상의 표류항로를 정리하면,

첫째, 장진포는 천태산에서 동해로 흐르는 동해천 하류의 작은 항구로 추정한다.

둘째, 흑룡해는 우스리스크만과 아무르스키만이 있는 표트르대제만이라고 추정한다.

셋째, 처음 표착한 목미도는 블라디보스토크 동쪽의 팟야티나로 추정한다.

넷째, 가리도는 루스키섬 제일 남쪽의 토비진곶이라 추정한다.

다섯째, 혈도는 해식동굴이 많은 리코르다섬으로 추정한다.

여섯째, 위도는 전라도의 위도와 닮은 볼쇼이 펠리스섬으로 추정한다.

일곱째, 일본 표착지는 조카이산을 발견하고 9일 만에 도착한 도비시마로 추정한다.

 

기록을 정리하면, 첫째, 조선에서 러시아, 일본을 거처 3개국을 돛단배로 직선거리 2,000마일 이상을 무사히 항해하였다. 둘째, 2년 반 동안 태풍과 해적들을 세 차례 만났어도 16나한상과 26명 한사람도 다치지 않았다. 이 기록은 선박과 항해장비가 발달한 오늘날도 이루기 힘든 대기록이다.

< Trace after the drift route of the Korean monk Beobseong in 17th century through experiment of ocean current bottles >

 

Buddhist monk Beobseong(法性) was scheduled to move statues of the Buddha's Sixteen Disciples, which was carved at Cheontaesan Mountain at Gyeongju, to Ssanggyesa Temple at Hadong in the spring of 1654. He sailed from Jangjin-po port at Gyeongju in loading the Buddist statues on ships, but met strong south wind and was adrift to northern sea, to Heugryong-hae, and then sailed to Japan, finally returned to his homeland Joseon in two and half years. He and his crews, Twenty-six people met pirates three times at Heugryong-hae, and visited Japanese capital city and was helped by many people. He and his crews departed Japan with Japanese merchant ship in May 1656, and arrived at Pusan in August that year, and finally enshrined the Sixteen Disciples of Buddha at Ssanggyesa Temple.

 

Kim Sujeung(金壽增), Confucian scholar and writer at those days, met the Buddhist monk Beobseong at Gangwon-do Peonggang-gun Heuiryoeng mountain Simjeog-am in 1665, and heard stories about the monk's drift and neighbor countries, recored them at the chapter Bubseong-jeon(法性傳) in the book Gogun-jip(谷雲集).

I have tried to find the reasons of the monk's drift three months, and how the monk named Mogmi-do(木米島), Gari-do(加里島), Hyeol-do(穴島), Ui-do(渭島), and where is Bonghua-do in Japan where he drifted ashore in nine days, through the method of my sailing experience, experiment of ocean current bottles, pictures from Google Earth.

 

I can make clear that the drift sea route of Beobseong's party and Buddist statues as follows.

1. Jangjin-Po is estimated to be small port near lower Donghae-cheon, which flows from Cheontaesan Mountain to the East Sea.

2. Heugryong-hae is estimated to be Peter the Great Gulf, where is Ussuri bay and Amur bay.

3. Mogmi-do, where Beobseong arrived first, is estimated to be Putyatin Island, east of Vladivostok.

4. Gari-do is estimated to be Cape Tobizina, south of Russky Island.

5. Hyoul-do is estimated to be Rikord Island, which has many sea caves.

6. Ui-do is estimated to be Bolshoy Pelis Island, which looks like Ui-do in the Jeolla-do, Korea.

7. The place where Beobseong drifted ashore in Japan 9 days later after finding Chokaizan(鳥海山), is estimated to be Tobishima(飛島).

 

We can make clear with the records, that he sailed more than 2,000 miles in straight distance from Joseon, passed through Russia, to Japan. And no one including Beobseong and his members had been hurt. This was excellent record in the view of today's high-developed vessel and navigation technology.
